Assembly Health Committee Hearing on ABX1 1

Today, the California Legislature's Assembly Health Committee held a hearing to consider ABX1 1, the health care reform proposal authored by Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata. The bill expands coverage to most uninsured Californians, including all children with family incomes up to 300% of the federal poverty level, regardless of immigration status. However, the current proposal only allows for funding to become available in 2010 – more than two years from now. California's children cannot wait that long, especially while many are at risk of losing the coverage they currently have.

Ted Lempert, President of Children Now, testified briefly on behalf of Californians for Healthy Kids on the importance of providing funding for health coverage for all children in California beginning in 2008.

"While we support a comprehensive reform package, and are pleased that ABX 1 1 contains the policies to cover all children, we are troubled that under this bill children will not receive the health insurance they need until 2010...Our leaders must take care of the health of California's children before they can consider their jobs done this year."
