Prop. 86 -- New Field Poll Results Released

Field Poll numbers released just yesterday indicate substantial voter support of the Yes on Proposition 86 initiative. The poll found that 63 percent of likely voters support the measure, while 32 percent said they are opposed.

Voters Yes No Undecided
Democrats 73% 19% 8%
Republicans 54% 42% 4%
Nonpartisan/
Others
70% 12% 18%
Total voters 63% 32% 5%

The Field Poll surveyed 762 likely voters between July 10-23 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percentage points.

As you can see, the positive numbers speak for themselves and the Yes on Proposition 86 campaign is encouraged by the voter support. However, the campaign will continue to educate voters, opinion-leaders and elected officials to the benefits that Prop. 86 will provide to all Californians. We appreciate your joining us in spreading the message: Proposition 86 will save lives and reduce smoking.

Budget Summary -- Significant Advances for Kids Health

The 2006-07 California budget includes a number of improvements to the Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs to ensure that more eligible children receive and retain health insurance. While many leaders for children were disappointed that the legislature failed to include one-time funding to assist local Children's Health Initiatives, the budget nonetheless provides significant advances toward the goal of reducing the number of uninsured children in California. Specifically, the budget (1) establishes a program for state-supported, county-based outreach and enrollment activities, (2) increases incentives
for those who help families apply for and renew Medi-Cal and Healthy Families benefits, and (3) simplifies Healthy Families enrollment procedures.

These improvements will become even more significant if Proposition 86 is approved by voters in November. If Prop. 86 passes, all children in California up to 300% of the poverty level will have access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance. At that time, local Children's Health Initiatives, their partners at First Five and other community-based organizations will assume the crucial role of ensuring that as many children as possible know about the programs, become enrolled, and have access to necessary health care.
