Dear children's health supporters,
Your continued support has made all the difference for children’s health. Thank
you for bringing the California for Healthy Kids effort this far and for helping
us cross the finish line in the next month.
********************************************************************
1. Show your support for children’s health legislation! Attend a press
conference in your area!
Local organizations across the state are organizing or have had press events to
urge Governor Schwarzenegger to sign AB 772 and AB 1199 — California Healthy
Kids Legislation. For example:
*SAN FRANCISCO-
This morning in San Francisco, Congregations Organizing for Renewal, Oakland
Community Organizations, San Francisco Organizing Project, Contra Costa
Interfaith Supporting Community Organization, and Peninsula Interfaith
coordinated a press conference. The author of AB 772, Assemblywoman Wilma Chan
(D-Oakland), called on the governor to sign the legislation, as did Assemblyman
Mark Leno (D-San Francisco). Other organizations participating included Children
Now, Children’s Defense Fund and The Children’s Partnership of the 100%
Campaign, and the San Francisco Health Plan. Two parents provided compelling
testimony about the impact that having a child without health insurance had on
their families.
Upcoming Events to Attend:
*SOUTH ALAMEDA COUNTY - TOMORROW - 9/16/05 - 10:00am
Congregations Organizing for Renewal are organizing a press event at Tiburcio
Vasquez Health Center (22331 Mission Boulevard in Hayward, CA). California State
Assemblymembers Alberto Torrico and Johan Klehs, and representatives from
California State Senator Liz Figueroa’s and Congressman Pete Stark’s office will
join Congregations Organizing for Renewal in support of AB 772 & AB 1199.
Additional representatives from the Tiburcio Vasquez Health Clinic, Alameda
Alliance for Health, and the 100% Campaign will also participate in this event.
Assemblywoman Wilma Chan and Assemblyman Dario Frommer, the lead authors of the
legislative bills, are also invited to attend. For more information please
contact: Pam Nelson Hollis, COR at 510-727-8833; cell 510 459-0683.
PICO affiliates, PICO California, and the 100% Campaign would like to coordinate
a press conference in your community. If you or your organization would like to
get involved or to find out more information, please contact Alani Cridge at
acridge@childrennow.org. If there is a press event or rally in support of AB 772
occurring in your area, please let us know and we will share that information.

2. Legislative Update: SB 437, AB 772 and AB 1199
AB 772 (Chan / Frommer / Escutia) which creates the California Healthy Kids
program and AB 1199 (Frommer/ Chan/ Escutia), which creates the California
Healthy Kids Fund, are on their way to the Governor’s desk. With his signature,
children’s health insurance legislation will become law this year. The Governor
has until October 9th to sign or veto the bills. SB 437 (Escutia / Alquist /
Chan / Midgen / Perata), the companion bill to AB 772, has been placed on the
inactive file on the Assembly Floor for consideration in early 2006, if
necessary.
ACTION NEEDED:
