The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP): A Success That Warrants Ongoing Support

Since 1997, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) – called Healthy Families in California – has successfully provided health insurance for low- and moderate-income children. In August 2007, however, a federal directive was issued that would limit federal funding for enrolled children in families above 250% of the poverty level; in California alone, over 34,000 children would be in jeopardy of losing their current health care.
