In 2010, Governor Schwarzenegger proposed state budget cuts that threatened to debilitate the Healthy Families and Medi-Cal programs. Fortunately, Medi-Cal and Healthy Families were protected by the new health care law, the Affordable Care Act, which strengthened incentives for our state to protect and expand children’s health coverage and included a requirement that California maintain its current eligibility standards, methodologies and procedures for Medi-Cal and Healthy Families.
We must continue to protect the health of our children. We will work with Governor Brown, his administration, and the legislature, to protect Healthy Families and Medi-Cal and identify a sustainable funding source so that no California children go without the affordable, comprehensive health coverage they need to grow up healthy and strong. Our state must also take advantage of opportunities under the Affordable Care Act to make it easier for children to gain and keep coverage.
