Children's Advocates Respond to State Officials Promoting Enrollment of Children into State and County Health Programs

Statement from Ted Lempert, President, Children Now; Coalition Partner and Spokesperson, Californians for Healthy Kids:

"We applaud the Administration for driving awareness about these programs because we know that this is a critical step in reducing the number of uninsured children in California. This week's state budget negotiations give the Legislature an immediate opportunity to lay the foundation for a statewide system to cover all children. Moving forward, California must find a long-term solution to bring affordable health coverage to all children in California. This would be made possible by the passage of the Tobacco Tax Act of 2006--an initiative expected to qualify for this November's ballot."

The PICO California Project is the united effort of 20 California congregation-community organizations affiliated with the PICO National Network. Collectively, we represent 350 congregations and 400,000 families statewide and are actively organizing in over 70 cities in Northern and Southern California.
